  • Alfa Romeo 159

2009 diesel model, 1.9 engine "JTDM". Does anyone know what gearbox it uses? Guy locally has one for sale good condition at a very good price but admits the gearbox is dodgy. I have heard it uses my old friend the M32. Can anyone confirm? Seems to be a bit of conflict advice online. Probably won't buy it to be honest if it has it, not going through that again!

By the way, this is the last car I am looking at no more second car hunting after this.

The 159 I believe uses a derivative of the F40
the engine is a fiat lancia Alfa ,gm unit very tuneable used in the Saab 9-3 I had 5 version of the 9-3 ysf3 model and and you can get 300 Bhp out of that me a Nathan brand ( aka dirty diesel tuned one )
bullet proof engine and gearbox but if not looked after can suffer what that one is suffering,
is it difficult to select gears or has 1st gear syncro gone .
if it's difficult to select then the gearbox turret is a weak point .
but you probably won't end up buying it so I've just wasted 5 minutes of my life writing this .

Cheers lizzard-t, and you are right I am probably not buying

Went to see it recently, gearbox felt exactly the same as the Insignia when I got it - difficult gear selection and a whine above 40 mph in 5th and 6th gear.

Thing is, it is/was such a nice looking car the 159 and was otherwise perfect at a good price. I'll have another think about it if I can find a garage that will do the box for a good price, I got mines on the Insignia done under warranty so do not know who they used (will try and find out)

It'll be a matter of weighing up the pros and cons as always I guess. The 159 doesn't exactly have a good rep for reliability (from what I read online) even with the gearbox issues aside, but it will be a second car and I won't be doing much mileage, so it might be worth it.

If you said you had a "ton" of cash, I'd believe you were actually Scottish, but you've stated you have a "tonne" of cash, I'm finding it hard to believe your nationality now as your worth the less of the two

Perhaps indecision is more my problem as well in my old age, not just money.

You should have seen me about a year and a half ago when I had no car. I think I spent about six hours a day on AutoTrader. Shortlisted a few cars - Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Astra, Toyota Avensis, BMW 3 series, Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus, etc.

...and after looking at about the million different cars I came back with an Insignia .

Thee is no way I am going to be able to pick a second car with all the choices out there!!!

Is,it the Quantum of solace edition?
black on black on black .the reliability issue is a load of tosh .they were built perfectly.
ive had sud and a 155 wide body Italian cars are made to be driven.
the price of thease cars are going up 159 is the last of the proper alfas then they started making cars like the mito.
but I've always said to myself when I grow up I'm getting a gulia.
if he's asking reasonable money then it's worth it but if he is asking silly money then buy yourself a little tikes car .

He was wanting around 2 grand, about right I think for a 2009 car with 90K on it in good condition with long MOT. It was a pretty standard model. I think he has sold it just today anyway.

But as I mentioned, if I do get a second car it will probably be something completely different than what I usually look at. Wouldn't surprise me if I came back with 1997 BMW 750iL to be honest. Then I can come here telling you all how wonderful and luxurious it is, all the while complaining it only does 15 miles per gallon (at best).

It was a little too much, but I have seen worse cars for 1500 - 2500 pounds or more! Gearbox aside it was otherwise perfect. Shame really.

I think I might get a 728i just to see how close I can get to the claimed 27 MPG

If I got a VXR I'd probably put RedEx in an expect 29 MPG
