The centre usb socket as said is mainly for data transfer, but it does have a 500ma supply I believe.
Because your phone is getting connected to another device you should see usb options come up on your screen. Options for photos, data and charging.
Every phone I have had connects via Bluetooth, connects with Android Auto and still accepts a charge from the usb socket. Granted i don't spend hours driving with it plugged in, but I never actually lose any battery level while plugged in.
Having said that my android phones are usually set up well, no extra services running, no hot spots, WiFi turns off when get into the car, screen is always off, do everything through AA or voice
But also as said good quality cables are a must

And I refuse to buy expensive flagship models that eat battery life just so the screen can be 1% brighter and apps open 0.005 seconds quicker.

Deal: INIU USB C Charger Cable, [5-Pack/1+1+2+2+3M] 3.1A USB C Cable Fast Charging, Zinc Alloy Nylon Braided Type C Cable, USB to USB C Cable for Samsung S20 S10 Huawei Xiaomi OnePlus Google LG, etc. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08J7G9S...P5GRDHYH595E9B

Above cables are best I have ever used, various designs from company, well presented and a great warranty and price.

Cheap chargers and cheap cables always produce interference,.also the routing of the cable and position of the phone matter.

I have found that the isn't really related to the charger lead quality as this normally affects the data flow and not so much the power.

Whilst I have not confirmed this with my power meter and digital load it looks like the USB port is working as designed. Supply upto 500ma and when the current is exceeded disconnect power.

What I did was disable fast and super fast charging on my phone so that it did not try and pull more than the USB standard of 500ma. Whilst in slow charge mode it worked perfectly in the car.

I did manage to get 2300mah but the voltage dropped from 5.1v to 4.3 so it isn't very well stabilised which may be the reason my phone reported an unstable psu and refuses to charge.

Disabling fast charging worked 100% of the time Click image for larger version

Normally your phone should automatically detect if the connected charger is capable of fast charging and disable it when it's not possible. Given you are able to get 2300mA out or it I would think a bad connection somewhere. 500mA is 500mA, not 4 times as much with a little drop in voltage.

Thats exactly what mine dose it knows when it's plugged into a genuine Google charger and lead .
if not it will just switch to adaptive charging. Automatically.
But of course the more apps you are using like the OP the more power will be drained out of the phone ,even if connected to a charging sauce ..
