It's a relatively cheap and easy fix from what I've read on here,,,,don't ask me where it's located on the 1.8 though

Sounds like a temperature sensor gone

Iirc from way back when some people reported this it was to do with the engine cooling. Does the engine 4temp guage go very high? Check coolant levels and that the coolant tank cap is on tight to retain pressure in the cooling system
