Hi all, just had a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi EcoFLEX that's been neglected and came up the hill smoking, owner gave up. Upon checking it found around 7-8 liters of oil in the crankcase (failed regens I presume) and it's smoking when warmed up now. Didn't check further yet, changed oil + filter, air filter and drove it back. Will inspect it Monday and see if smoke disappears after oil is burned off. If not, new turbo. It's on 86k. Will be a nice car when finished.
Smoke was white-ish to light-blue-ish smoke. No coolant loss, no loss of power, upon inspection there was oil on air filter side of the turbo - not loads, but definitely visible, yet not dripping or pouring out. When I spoke with previous owner he didn't use the car on long runs at all. Well done dealerships / car sales - should be fit for purpose, as he's just had another diesel. Anyhow. No major faults on scanning it, only minor bits and original issue was that the car came up the hill by my house and started smoking and revving up and down, not revving excessively though, just say between 2-3.5k rpm, just fluctuating. He then stopped it and left it running for about 30 secs, then started it again next day for about 20 sec, but car's done exactly the same. Ended up buying another and he asked me if I want it. No attempts at stripping, checking and should be genuine as I'm only few doors down. As said, changed oil, I suspect that the fluctuation was caused by MAF being contaminated with oil spray, all cleaned now and runs absolutely fine. Possibly (and most likely) blew the seals on the turbo, hence oil in air duct. There is a chance of oil getting through not massively due to too high volume and oil being dilluted by diesel to almost 1:1 ratio, considering amount drained out. Knowing local garages someone might have topped it up causing oil level too high, wouldn't be surprised. DPF is on 73%, can do static regen but don't want to, until I know the turbo survived or have been swapped. Drives absolutely normal, no power loss, etc. Only issue was it started smoking (not as much as some I've seen) light blue smoke, like burning off oil - which can be the case if it was everywhere in the system. No errors / messages on the dash, oil was due for change and I think he waited to change it with the MOT, which it never got to. Only other fault is left headlight not coming on, but haven't checked anything on that yet. Smoke might be caused by oil pouring out of oil filter housing (+1 for Vauxhall engineers for that stupid design) but it's coming out the exhaust too. Not belching out though. Haven't run it long enough to let it settle, so not sure yet will it start disappearing or get dense. Will check later on or tomorrow. No smoking until engine is warmed up, say 5 minutes driving.
