  • Oil cooler leak? Or sump.

    Hi all,

Noticed my driveshaft, suspension and anti roll bar covered in oil yesterday, had a look and thought it was leaking from the filter. So went out and bought new oil and filter but upon further inspection it looks to me like the oil cooler or sump is leaking. I’ve changed the oil and filter anyway.

I know the petrols suffered from oil cooler leaks.

ive degreased everything so everything’s spotless so it’ll be easy to spot any fresh oil coating anything.

I’ll upload some pictures if anyone can make sense of them.

Personally, I'd spray it with brake cleaner and dry it all off.
when happy, start the car, let it idle then watch.

The sump and the oil cooler can leak.

I’ve cleaned it all up with degreaser now so I’ll keep an eye on it, it was last serviced in April so thought it might be spillage being flown about by the driveshaft but there seemed to be a lot of oil. But dipstick always looked good.

anyway I’ve changed the oil and stuff so I’ll keep an eye on it. Hopefully just a leaky filter.

Driven about 30 miles since, no puddles on the floor like before. Everything looks dry so fingers crossed.

Just parked it up for the night, just done 10 miles. Surely if it was the oil cooler it would be a constant leak. So far so good. All looks dry, or as dry as can be. Still quite wet under there with old Mucky oil and degreaser that I couldn’t get in to wipe away. No puddles on the drive so I’m hoping and praying.

I’ll be a paranoid mess this coming week checking it every time I drive it but last thing I want is low oil pressure and the bottom end going.

On my old 1.8 Astra (X18XEV) engine I had to replace the oil cooler/filter housing gasket as that was weeping.
i did notice oil exactly where you have when I first picked up my insignia, took it upon myself to clean it and it never came back. I can only put it down to oil dripping everywhere when they changed the filter as the first time I changed mine. I made a complete mess!

Had to take a video, this is the front end of the sump I couldn’t get access to clean. But thinking maybe crankshaft seal? Also been developing this chirping noise over the past couple months. Don’t hear it when under load but hear it when coasting and at idle.

The chirping could be the boost valve....located on the slam panel mate

I’ll have another listen tomorrow, replaced it once already due to it vibrating. If so that’s easy.

had a listen today, definitely coming from the pulley area. Guess it’s one just degrading gradually. I’m sure he’ll find which one next week when it goes in.
