  • A20DTR Cambelt shredding

    Hi all,

Aswell as having Insignias I have a biturbo Zaf with the A20DTR engine, that has cambelt issues.

In short I trusted the service history in the book and was told by a stealership that they had done a cambelt repair after it had shreded, what I thought was the origional belt and snapped the rockers and damaged the cams.

Anyway turns out the service records from 2015 to 2020 didnt match any on the stealerships computer!

1st owner had a major service done again in 2021 @55k and asked stealership for belt change price which was sky high so went for an independent to fit!

This belt shreded at 57k, he recovered the Zaf to the stealership who refused a lifetime warranty repair as the origin of the belt was "unknown" and not fitted by them!

The independent then brought the owner out of the vehicle and patched it up with 2nd hand cams/rockers and a 2nd new belt kit! Then sold it on to the trade and it ended up on a retail pitch where I brought it!

After 1k miles, but after 12 months, this belt has shredded aswell! I tried vauxhall care as I thought it had the full dealership history and a vauxhall approved repair but got no where over 3 months!

So now need suggestions on possible cause or best way forward to get a reliable repair! Ie

    possible causes are
    1) defective water pump ( impellers made of plastic and have disintegrated) caused lock up of the water pump
    2) tensioner has sezed causing lock up
    3) crank seized ( bearing caps have "spun" )
    4) camshaft/s have seized .
    5) the small chain between the camshaft has broken and locked up.

not knowing what parts were used and there condition if second hand, then you are picking up someone elses mistake .
Best course of action would be to remove whats left of the belt and try to turn these parts by hand, if any roughness or they don't move then thats the possible cause .
thease engine are not known to ingest the auxiliary belt which can cause the same effect.

      Cheers Lizz t,

Atm Zaf still a stealership being transported back late next week.

In there vehicle appraisal they only said timing was 90 degrees out but engine turned over. They hadn't even gone as far as removing the rocker cover to see resulting damage!

The indepent were honest, almost to the point of laughing in my face, that they replaced cams/rockers with 2nd hand items.

I'm not sure of that was a whole unit including the camshaft gears and Vac pump? Ive read camshaft gear bearings can also break up causing failures and replacing the vac pump unit is essential?

In addition I was reading somewhere that the A20DTR has two idle rollers rather than one and a different cam belt length? If anyone has an experience of changing a belt on this engine I would value their experience.
