  • Internitten starting issues

    Hi all

yesterday i stopped to get fuel abd wheb i webt to start car it wouldnt start. Initially nothing then a single click. I put junp leads on car and it started straight away.

later that day same issue, and jump leads work evebtually but took ages

Got home, swtiched car off agaib abd tried it abd nothing.

this morning i tri3d it and it started first go.

this is making ne suspect the starter motor but im a bit puzzled why junp starting would help that unless it was just a coincidence

    what yous reckon?

    cheers

Sounds like possibility the battery is on it's way out. Have you checked the voltage of it?

Yeh put multineter on it this morning. Initially got 12.09 but climb3d to 12.30. Not sure if fluctuation is normal.

is it nornal for a bad battery to faik to start a car then go on to start the car the next day without being charged ? As thats what happened

      thanks

Fluctuation might have just been the connection of the leads from the multimeter to the battery. But 12.3v is a knackered battery. Healthy battery is 13v plus.

It might have been that from jumping the car then driving it changed the battery again enough to start the next day.

Would be worth checking the alternator is okay. When the car is running, check the voltage at the battery. Looking at something like 14.5v then.

Definitely sounds like your battery is either dead or dying. Possibly has a dead cell in it.

Also make sure your terminals are tight and clean and also check earthing just to rule out a poor connection.
12.6v is a good battery when the car is switched off.

                    Hey all

                    Think I've this issue fixed

The termination for the big 500a to the starter was very loose so snugg3d it up and will drive and hope for best

Side issue I took the opportunity to tighteb all the connections and when doing a wee earth one bridge the ratchet to the positive

Sparks flew everywhere and part of my ratchet welded

Was quite scary definitely learned a lesson there no damage to car or me thankfully

Glad you sorted it and it was a cheap and easy fix.

Arcing a metal tool is something I think we have all done but never admit to.

                          Haha that's reassuring to know

Will keep this battery tester to see if its any good might be handy to have for future use
