  • Intermittent engine droning on part throttle no power 2017 B 1.6 Turbo D

hi everyone, first post on the forum... Here is a strange one for you, I have an issue where sometimes I get a loud droning noise when driving at part throttle, usually in 4th gear at 30-40mph. The engine bogs down but it shows no fault lights. The strange thing is, if I pull over and turn the engine off and on again, its fine and the car runs lovely again. Its frustrating as it only happens when it feels like it. If I stop the car after it happening for a few miles my fan continues to run for a few mins. Any ideas appreciated!

It could be a boost leak or turbo Boost solinoid
Have you a good diagnostic tool?
If so plug it in and see if there's any pending codes or can you get live data.thats a good thing to look at

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure where the boost solenoid is on this engine? I did think about checking the hose but my thinking is that it would happen all the time if it was split. I may be able to borrow a diagnostic tool and see it if throws up anything.

Been doing some reading and searching. What's the chances that the turbo veins are sticking and need a clean? I could try some of that Revive cleaner and see what happens first

Anything is worth a try at the moment.
Because without any diagnostic report to go on then we are all playing guess the fault.

Thanks, I was hoping someone might say something like "yep, common issues, try this" chuckle I will give the Revive a go then if no good I will come back with some info on the diagnostic scan.

It could be doing a dpf regeneration. Though that doesn't usually result in loss of power but you do notice a different engine sound and the fans will be running because it gets hot. It's not a good idea to turn it off if that's what it's doing. Have you noticed anything else when it does this, do the revs at idle sit a bit higher? A dpf regeneration will happen whenever the car feels like it.

Hey Drew, I haven't noticed any higher RPM although I will look when it does it again. It is frustrating as it drives so nice when it doesn't do it. Is thee a way of telling when a regen is in play on an Insignia B?

No. There's no indication, but you will notice a change in engine note, usually sounds a bit gruff, the engine will idle a little higher at rest, exhaust gas will smell like it's over fuelling and the radiator fan will start even though you may not have been driving hard. It could be some other issue but you mentioned a change in engine note and fan running that's two of the signs of a regen in progress.

If it is to do with regeneration then check your oil level make sure it's not too high and smelling of diesel .
have you had a diesel car with a DPF fitted before or is this your first diesel car with a DPF ?.
just as a side note thease 1.6 diesels do seem to regenerate more often than say the old insignia A 2.0 diesel.

I am pretty sure this is my first diesel with a DPF. I checked the oil level and its good. What ever happened to cars you could just get in and drive eh?
