  • Insignia B start/stop issue

    Hi Everyone,

    I’ve bought a 67 plate 2.0 CDTI Insignia B. I haven’t posted a photo of it as I’m a little sceptical about it.

The issue I want to ask about is the start stop system.

When I come to a stop, put it in neutral, lift clutch, the engine stops as it should and needle points “Auto Stop” or whatever the term is on the dial.

My issue is restarting the engine.
When you press the clutch the engine doesn’t restart the majority of the time. On occasion it starts as soon as you press the clutch.
What does reliably get it going is putting the vehicle into gear, raising clutch to the bite point which then prompts a message on the dash of “press clutch to start”.
When you press the clutch it starts up.

I have no issues starting the car so I don’t think it’s a clutch switch.
I’ve driven 800 miles mostly motorways this week so I don’t think it’s battery charge
All parameters for start/stop seem to be met as it activates and stops the engine when stationary.

    Any thoughts?

If we think there’s an issue I’ll need to contact the warranty team.

    Thanks

Best thing to do is to return it to the seller to let them investigate because its under a warranty,
the stop start is working as you say, it just doesn't always do as stop start is supposed to

I’ve got it booked in for warranty due to an oil leak.

I had to admit defeat and read the manual to make sure I wasn’t missing something, which I was…

It turns out that on the Insignia B you have to stop, apply the hand brake, take your foot off the brake. You can then press the clutch to start. Basically you need to “properly stop”.

If the engine stops just as you are coming to a standstill, in the split seconds after the engine will restart when the clutch is pressed and your foot is on the brake

If you have your foot on the brake without the handbrake applied you can restart the engine by putting it in gear, raising the clutch a bit (let’s say 25%) and then dipping the clutch again.

Quite different to the last 2 insignia A’s I’ve had and all the other start stop vehicles I’ve driven. I’ve never had to have the handbrake applied and foot off the brake!!

        I understand
I've got it on my vw transporter and my volvo
The transporter will stop ok and you don't require the handbrake to be applied ,but its most annoying habit is that it will not tell you when the system has been disabled, so you dip the clutch only to be told you have to start the van manually.
I normally just turn the ducker off !

          My stop start works slightly.

I have to remove the car from gear and release the clutch. The engine then stops.

To restart the engine I can put it in gear and it won't restart until I release the pressure off the foot brake.

          Different from the Insignia a.

I've not long ago programmed my stop/start out.....as many know now I have a bmw..the stop start also comes back on by default after a restart....but being an auto, its even more annoying than on a manual car.......so I bought a diagnostic/coding device called Bimmercode....and can actually code a multitude of stuff on car

I've been too lazy Dave to programme mine out, so I just press the button on each start to turn it off . I must get round to prgramming it out
