  • Intermittent service parking brake

So for the past few days I've been getting a message on the dash saying service parking brake along with the yellow symbol that accompanies it

while the light is on the parking brake button does not work on or off but I can still take parking brake off by starting to drive and it puts itself on when I take the keys out

The light sometimes goes off which allows the button to work as normal and while driving the light will go off and come on periodically with each time it comes on giving me the service parking brake message on the dash making me think it's a connection issue more than an issue with the motor

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Just realised I've posted this in the completely wrong section 🤦ðŸ»â€â™‚ï¸

I've moved it to general chat for you.

I didn't know the e brake put itself on when you take the key out. Is the car an automatic?

No its a manual it only puts it on when removing the key if the light is on

      Normally it doesn't do it

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes to see if the ECU has gotten confused. Might clear it.

Np....probably not that but it's a cheap place to start. It's surprising what disconnecting the battery sorts on Insignias.

Ah ok...well it was worth a try. The next cheap option I'd try is give the button a good blast with contact cleaner but tbh if its coming up on your dash, the issue is probably elsewhere.

Do you hear the motor working?
if not then the motor is behind the passenger side splash guard
Also check rear brake pads that can affect the EHB .

Motor not working when using the button but when I take the key out I can hear the motor work and the handbrake engages (only does this when the service parking brake light is on as normally taking the key out wouldn't do this) and when I pull away the handbrake releases as normal

But when the service parking light goes off every now and then the button works fine

                    Hope that makes sense

Also pads still have a good bit of life in them

So sprayed contact cleaner in the motor connector and took the button out and sprayed that too and still nothing the problem is now permanent with the service parking brake staying on and after paying attention it automatically is applying when turning the engine off not when the key is being removed as a sort of fail safe it seems so I think the issue maybe with the button as the motor still engages the parking brake

It's odd that the system apears to be working yet the fault is showing.

It would be advisable to get it plugged in with a specialist independant and have them check for fault codes.
This will narrow down thr search and should identify the culprit.

My money is on a wiring fault under the rear of the car. The locations of some of the loom plugs is simply bonkers and I have had to remove arch liners to clean some caked in mud and crud in the past.
Once the seals on the plugs fail and water gets in your in big trouble.

Lots of the buttons pretty cheap on ebay. Might be worth trying one before pulling the car to bits.
