By all accounts a reliable motor but will I still be able to tinker with DIY servicing and maintenance?

Looking at a 2013/2014 (X250) 3.0d S Portfolio model.

Recently I did look at leaving vauxhall and picking up a Jaguar 2.0 XE, and it was a high chance I was going to go for it, right until I read about issues they can have with the engine and the repair cost due to them being 'hard to work on'.

The 3.0 litre has plastic inlet system with a cleaver ( not so ) by-pass system which with the nature of the heat in the engine bay .causes air leaks and boost issues.which when they go wrong is expensive, and a pain to trace leaks.
The 6 cylinder engine is complex and is known for spinning main bearings.
Oil changes are to be observed and kept to .
Regeneration is also to be observed and allowed to complete.
Any diluted oil due to failing regeneration will lead to oil level rising and big end bearing failure.
My neighbour had one and it happened to him .
Electrics are another issue.the famous air vents not opening when starting the car and the electric gear knob not coming up they are complex and expensive.
Gearbox oil changes are another that requires strict changes.
Torque converters are known to fail.
But in the end.its your money but maintenance is not for the faint hearted.

Thanks for that, no it needs to be a car that I could easily maintain myself as I don't think I've ever paid a garage to do anything

Best car ever owned. But things (as you may know) as failing/failed.

Tailgate knackered.
Heated Seats not working
Got a few war wounds from its time in battle

Plus side?
130k miles and 6 years of ownership and never ever broken down.
Shes served me so well, I get on with her better than the wife

If I could transplant the engine into something more newer, ive changed the oil every 6-8 months, oil seal done and I know the engine inside out :-(

Skoda Superb Estate?

Can confirm, I've had a couple of Octavia's in the past, the Superb is virtually the same car just bigger. Reliable, and taxi drivers swear by them, very good cars in any 2.0 TDi form (if you get a nice looked after one). Any spec, any year, they are all good.

Not much experience with Jaguar, by guy local to me who cherished his 1970's/1980's XJ saloons and said it was the best cars he ever had, until after about the year 2000 Jaguar (among other manufacturers) went downhill and he never bought one again.

The thing is if you purchase another make then you will need the help of there forum.
Now yes we may know a lot,but sometimes you require those who drive the things .
