  • Insignia 2L EcoFlex Overheating - Code Confirm : P2479 & P2428 - Code Pending : P2101

    Hi all,
I'm new here, so excuse any mistakes I make. - as a little introduction : I'm Callum / Caz and I have a Vauxhall Insignia 2L Diesel EcoFlex from 2013 pre-facelift (I believe), with about 100k miles on the clock. Had it for about 6-7 Months now.

Recently I've been having an Overheating issue. Oh joy...

    Here's the story:
    - First time ; I was just leaving the cinema when I was going up onto the slip road onto the motorway and boom, the car maxed out and started to scream at me to stop the car since it was overheating... the fun part was that there was no where to park or stand at on this road and people pelt it 90mph. So I had to find a way off. Just as I was pulling over after finding a way out it started to sound BAD, made some clanking noises, jittered quite a bit and the joyful engine light. When I was parked, the engine sounded like a jet with the fans, the coolant was cold. Left it there until the next day.
The next day. The battery was dead so there was no getting this bad boy started. Towed it to the nearest shop which was right around the corner. They first said "We think the piston blew and the engine is a write-off" but they still gave it ago (didn't help I had a recent oil change and the dipstick said it had nothing, they added only 1L in and it was maxed out). Anyways they got the car to turn on, did some test driving and said the thing is working fine as it should, they don't know what was up with it. No engine light, no problems, nothing. but still costed me £50.

Since then the car had the occasional engine light show up but by the time I was pretty much ready to get it check out, the thing was gone or the OBD failed to read. It would also often set of the fans when I got home from some of my drives but not all.

    - Second time ; I was driving to work, I can't remember if I was picking up speed or what since I was just in autopilot mode. Suddenly the thing shot up AGAIN!! Luckily pulled over before more damage could occur. The car, again, sounded like a jet with the fans. Left it there until my shift finished and towed it home. Battery again flat. (currently charging as I'm typing this).

So this is where we're sorta at right now.
    • There is no leaks from coolant, in fact when the mechanics checked the engine they said "this is a very clean 2013 engine that they've ever seen". - the car was well maintained from the previous owner (sold due to going back to home country).
    • Mechanics also said to me mentioning a rev bounce that there "could be air going into the car" or "spark issue" (I can't remember since it's been a month or 2)
    • Reddit suggested about buying a Thermostat, I did but it was the wrong fitting. So I'm sending that back.
    • I charged the car and tried to start it. It would crank but no start, fan still going mental once the key is in.
    • I got myself an OBD reader and it came out with the codes as stated in the title - Code Confirm : P2479 & P2428 - Code Pending : P2101. While scanning the car lit up like a Christmas Tree since the battery died (it wasn't charged fully and was left sitting for a bit).

Again there is NO leaks, NO smoke coming from the car engine or exhaust.

What I've read so far is - P2479 is associated to one of the sensors in the front, this sensor is to read the temperatures, right? - The P2428 is the other sensor. These sensors if wrong could trigger the P2101? - The P2101 is a DPF issue, which could just be getting gunky and stuck?

Extra information -- Before the overheating issue ever happened. I would sit in the parking zone at my workplace texting my family that I am on my way home from work, the car would make a weird noise while the rev would bounce a little and I think it was set the fans off too but it's been a while so I can't remember it exactly. Going from memory, on my old Coupe SIII, I had an O2 issue that rev the car.

I believe I got every information that I know of and remember all down here in the best description I can. Crossing my fingers it's not a write-off engine and that it's just a faulty sensor or thermostat?

    Cheers,
    Caz.

P2479 is exhaust gas temperature sensor number 1 .its a known issue that it will suddenly start reading sprous temp readings of some have had 400 degrees c .I would be getting some live data to make sure it is that sensor and not number 2 which is after the DPF
the symptoms you have tie in with others that have had the issue.
P2428 is engine over heating please turn off which is explained by the issue you have .
P2101 is throttle actuator control module cannot open throttle butterfly's. And so car will not accelerate..? Weird one if you have had no,problem accelerating.

So possibly the P2479? - could explain the sudden rise of temp since it isn't gradual, it's instant. I'll see if I can get a live read when I get my car up and running. How instant would the live reading be to figuring out the problem or is it more of just drive every day and keep checking? I also used BlueDriver OBD which has live data info with it.
P2428 ah so this shows by default when the car overheats then.
P2101 I don't recall any acceleration issue, only time I would say it showed was when the overheated message popped up the first time and I was practically gliding myself to a stop. Besides from this, no accelerator issue. Could be caused from trying to jumpstart maybe or while I was accelerating the car then showed the overheating message?

Thank you for getting in touch!

that's exactly whats happening, the symptoms are exactly what you are saying
if you an get live data look at both number 1 and 2 sensors if you have one thats reading anything above say 150 or a spouous figure then thats the culprit.
