Some of you will already know I work for a community of nuns and today I was asked to meet them in the community room at 10am where the proceeded to applaud me when I walked in. The reason? Today marks my 35th year working for them. It seems a lifetime away since I started back in 1985 and I've seen lots of changes but the one constant has been the stability of the job. As for the sisters, they've seen me go from being a young 16 year old kid to getting married, becoming a dad and becoming a grandad.
Most of the sisters are very elderly now and in recent years we've lost quite a few so I doubt I'll reach retirement with them but I'll gladly take each year as it comes and hope for the best. Around 5 years ago our convent became a convent with care and they now employ a team of carers so as sisters within the institute around the country need more care, our convent is one of the places they come to spend their final years.
I just thought I'd mention it because I know jobs for life are becoming increasingly rare these days which it a real shame.
