The answer is simple. If you can afford the running costs get a petrol. It's more refined and more reliable. Keep it serviced and you can fill up and forget about it...No regens...No DPF blocking...No EGR failing and you don't look like the great pretender sat at the traffic lights in a nice car but a bag of spanners rattling under the bonnet.
In all seriousness....If you're doing 20k a year you could get away with either. The extra cost of running a petrol would probably equal the extra maintenance/repair costs of a diesel.
*Waits for the backlash from farmer Giles and his friends*

If you enjoy revving the crap out of your engine then the petrol is the one to go for if you could afford the fuel bill.
If you enjoy changing gears early and reached optimum speed to gear, then diesel for you.
I always believe in for everyday driving diesel its the way forward as you reach optimum power in the usual rev range and you getting good economy at same time. And they are lovely motorway cruisers.
It does make me laugh when i see big boys like focus st, scooby etc, doing 60mph on the inside lane of motorway, and get over taken by regular car. So in the real world who is faster getting to their destination .

Gear change on a petrol is when it's supposed to be changed. That's why petrol owners go through less clutches. A diesel engine might let you get away with lazy gear changes but you forget all the stress you're putting other components under because you're misusing the torque.
A good try but you just failed miserably.
Have you ever thought Scooby's et al are taking it steady so as to give diesel drivers the chance to look at a car with a proper engine in it.2017 Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport Sri Nav 1.5 (165ps) Turbo petrol in Lava Red - Keyless entry and start - 18” five spoke alloy wheels - Front fog lights - Tinted rear windows - Aluminium sports pedals - Ambient interior led lighting - Front and rear parking assist - Active emergency braking - Forward collision assist - Front pedestrian alert - Traffic sign recognition - Lane keep assist - Cruise control - Speed warning and limiter - Voice recognition - Bluetooth - Duel zone climate control - Front and rear electric windows - High beam assist - Auto lights - Auto wipers - Wifi hotspot - 8” colour touchscreen Navi 900 with Android Auto, Apple Car Play and DAB

18 are ok when you know how to drive.
The only issue I had was if you pulled away from stand still in first...Say, taking a gap...the rev limiter sometimes kicked in. Dangerous that. But other than that. It would overtake fine. You just needed to drop a gear as you're supposed to do.2017 Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport Sri Nav 1.5 (165ps) Turbo petrol in Lava Red - Keyless entry and start - 18” five spoke alloy wheels - Front fog lights - Tinted rear windows - Aluminium sports pedals - Ambient interior led lighting - Front and rear parking assist - Active emergency braking - Forward collision assist - Front pedestrian alert - Traffic sign recognition - Lane keep assist - Cruise control - Speed warning and limiter - Voice recognition - Bluetooth - Duel zone climate control - Front and rear electric windows - High beam assist - Auto lights - Auto wipers - Wifi hotspot - 8” colour touchscreen Navi 900 with Android Auto, Apple Car Play and DAB
