  • Am I being a snob?

So as you might have seen, I bought my Insignia at the weekend and it needs a bit of work done starting with a cambelt change.

I did some research last night and intended to phone my local dealer for a price and also found a VX specialist not too far from as well that I am going to get a price from.

The thing is my father in law has his own indi garage and he restores classic cars. He has done work for me in the past and is pretty much spot on.

Like I said i was going to go to a main dealer or specialist but is it worth it? I have read that some of you won't give the mail dealer the time of day but am I being a snob wanting a specialist to do it just so it says 'VX Specialist' or shall I ask the missus dad? He has a service stamp and what not, I would be able to get the parts myself and just ask him to do the work. He would do it at mates rates too.

Basically I'm just after some peace of mind!! Haha.

Get your Father In Law to do it mate. You don't need a specialist for cambelt change.

I know that some garages can build a strong relationship with their customers, but staff and management can change overnight, and such relationships are only as good as the people who maintain them. As a customer, you have a right to expect that the work undertaken is of high quality, and that unnecessary maintenance is not recommended. Some garages will make a big deal of being a specialist for certain makes, but for general maintenance (recalls excepted) this is no more necessary than using 'performance' fuel in a bog-standard engine.

If you know someone you can trust who has proven expertise, surely this is better than a garage whose main objective is to make money from customers? This isn't a swipe at main agents, or garages in general, I use a main agent, but I wish I had a father in law like yours!

I agree, I've lost all faith and trust in all garages I've used over the years. Unless I know for certain that a garage is doing a good job, or I could do it myself, it's peace of mind over dealer stamps for me. Been bitten far too many times. Father in law gets my vote

Why not get Farther in law to show YOU (watch over your shoulder) how to do it yourself.

Don’t break any of his tools, and make sure they go back where you got them from. Some are pretty touchy about their tools. LMAO

Yep.... sort of agree with you buddy.
Some may let you use them, some would not.....
My old man was a time-served panel beater and would not let anyone touch his tools.

Oh yes, don't worry there is a mutual respect for him and his tools! Haha

Just got off the blower and the results are as follows -

                      Main dealer - £590
                      Local VX specialist - £325
                      Dad in law - £200

I didn't mention him showing me how to do it cos he might have charged more then! :P

He did say that while he was doing a search that it didn't need doing until 72 months (6 years) or 80k miles. Mines on 49k and just over 5 years. I'm sure though that I read somewhere that it's every 5 years? Or was it all a dream??

While I'm at it, would everyone suggest sticking to dad in law with the actual service aswell or would we look at the specialist?

Good price with the in law [emoji106]. I would take the recommended Vauxhall intervals with a pinch of salt, water pumps normally come in to play in a cambelt change and could go before the belt. I'd much sooner do an 'early' change for peace of mind than have the headache of a snapped belt. Same vote again for the service

Ye that's a good point, for the sake of 6 months it would give me peace of mind!

BTW are you lot on commission with him? :P
