  • Navi 900 IntelliLink map update

Really desperate and hoping for help. This question has possibly been answered before and if it has I'm sorry but I can't find the thread.

I have just brought a 2014 Elite as my daily commute. The maps haven't been updated since new and as I travel all over the place I thought I would bite the bullet and bring them up to date.

So £125 lighter the maps arrive from Here maps via the VX link. Reading the back of the box it says that owners of MY14 cars need to consult dealer for radio software update before installing.

I have contacted 2 different dealers local to me to ask if the radio update is necessary and if so, what does it add and how much. Both told me it may not be necessary but the only way to find out is to book it in, pay the minimum of £75 to find out.

My questions are, do I need to do this or can I just update the maps. Has anyone else come across this as I can't find it mentioned anywhere via my trusted search engine, or on Vx or Here maps website. And if I just have to do it does anyone know a cheaper way as, £200 for updated maps that will last 6 months tops is a little bit too extravagant.

I already have a TomTom 6000 with lifetime updates, but just wanted the backup for the days when I have left the house in a hurry and not picked it up.

Any help that anyone can give me will be truly appreciated

    Andy

Nice one Anran. I've been considering updating my 2014 maps too so would be interested to hear the outcome. I'm I'm Leeds. Have a good dealer in Harrogate. Didn't realise u had to update the radio soft ware first? May be able to check my end.

Henry-root, spoke to Vx customer services yesterday. They put me through to the Infotainment specialists. After checking via my vin number I was told that my system had to be updated as it was showing as not being done, and doing the map update only could brick my system. This apparently only applies to MY14 models.
The update will add no extra functionality to the system. I phoned local dealer (Evans Halshaw) and told them this, the original £75 was for diagnosis only, to actually apply the updates they wanted to charge £200+ making the overall cost for updates, that will last a couple of months at best, well over £300.
I thought the original £119 for the map updates was a bit extravagant, but now it has become a rip off.
The worse thing about all this, is you don't find out about the radio update until you have paid your money and opened the packaging of the map update.
Really wish I had just stuck to my TomTom as I am now left with a map update I have no use for, Here maps wont take them back because they have been opened.

One thing this did remind me of though, why I stopped buying Vauxhalls 20 odd years ago. The experience then with Vx's customer service was diabolical and from my dealings with them over this issue, it is more than apparent it hasn't changed at all.

Bloody Norah! Well done for following this trail and I am sorry you didn't succeed but at least you have (not) paved the way for others to mistakenly follow what Vauxhall mistakenly suggest is the best option. Are you in West Yorkshire as a matter of interest?

          Hiya Henry-root

          No I'm in Buckinghamshire

Couldn't believe the struggle I had trying to get this information, probably about 3 hours in telephone calls.

Still hoping it's a scam on behalf of Vx and one of the very knowledgeable people on here will come back with a better way.

If not I'm £119 out of pocket, although I may be able to format the thumb drive and use it as storage, that'll save me about a fiver

I'd managed to persuade a local distributor to discount the price of the actual update but neither the service manager or spares manager advised me that I had to update the system first!!! Luckily I put the project on the back burner!!!

It's a very great shame that such a great car does not have a "proper" sat nav but I gather there are many others like that. I'm even told "Yes but this is just a car sat nav not a proper one!" Whilst digging around I found that TomTom were actually in talks with Vauxhall some years ago but evidently that all fell through.

I see on this forum that some members have actually gone so far as to replace the whole console and / or the associated software. Others link TomTop cameras on smart phones by Bluetooth. I now use my TT 1005 but it's not what I expected to do when I bought the car to put it mildly!

Henry-root, my family car is a Rav4. They give you 3 years of free map updates and the process is so easy. You download the file, put it on a stick and then plug the stick in to your car. Start to finish under an hour job done. The sat nav itself is not much different to my tomtom in both accuracy and ease of use and I use it instead of taking my TomTom with me.

Vauxhall are just a rip off and this will be the last one I buy for sure. There is no need to make an easy task difficult and prohibitively expensive, except for greed.

What a result. Booked car in to see if it needed the update. Took it down to local dealer today and it turns out my car had already had the update that was needed before the maps could be updated. Dealer could tell this by cars history that he printed off even though Vauxhall infotainment specialist reckoned it hadn't been done, and they can see the same info as the dealerships. Lucky car has full dealer service history.
Nice man in local dealership says there had been another update since the 2014 one so he would get that done for me and while they had the car they would install the new maps to save me the hassle of doing it myself. And because of the grief I had trying to get this sorted he was going to do it for a fixed price, which is an acceptable fraction of what I was originally quoted.
Part way to restoring my faith in Vauxhall.

Final say on this most painful sorry saga.

The infotainment system update that is needed to be able to install new maps on a MY14 Insignia was apparently done on a recall in 2014.

So long as your car have no outstanding recalls then it should be OK to go ahead and just update the maps.

Quite why no one at Vauxhall could tell me this right at the beginning is beyond me, but hey ho at least my sat nav is now fully up to date...………………….at least until tomorrow

Sorry to wee on your fireworks , but I had to have mine updated cost £70 .
I tried to do the map update and it did not work had to send the map back another £20 they then sent a new map and it worked . There should be information on here about this I know I have spoken about it a couple of times .mine was also a 2014 plate and had had updates down when they were available

Not weeing on my fireworks Lff64. Sounds to me like it was your map update usb that was at fault and not anything to do with software updates as you had them done.

According to Vauxhall it was only the 2014 update which, was on a recall and took 3 hours to apply, that is needed to update the maps.

If this was done the dealership can see it on their system, as they did with mine. Today they did check if I needed any other updates, which I didn't, and installed the maps for me. As I have had a mare getting this sorted out they even waived the charge that would normally be applied just to check if you need the updates.

They updated the nav software and after that the map update worked with the replacement USB , so I could not say for sure which was at fault , the usb was faulty or the car needed the update .
I no longer have the car now so I could not check to see what versions it has .
But like you say it was hard working and took ages to sort out speaking to VX and the map people

I think all of you should buy snow foam for your car as i am buying from and its lots of fun ever weekend for me specially with my kids. So, Instead to go out, pay money and wait for your number you should wash your vehicle by self and make your weekends amazing.
