  • Sound simulator for my crawler

Some of you may know I do a bit of crawling. For those who don't It's an anorak thing.

It's an electric 1/10th scale truck that you take off roading climbing over obstacles and that sort of thing.

    It's based on the Land Rover Defender 110 - here's a pic

Anyway. I'm constantly adding things to it and the latest addition is a sound simulator. It's a really impressive piece of kit. Far better than I was expecting. You can add engine sounds from F1 to Lorries. Like most vehicles on the road, the real Land Rover Defender comes in both diesel and petrol guises. The sound simulator can have two engine sounds loaded at a time that you can switch between so I thought I'd have some fun doing a bit of research to find if I can match the real life sounds. The following 4 youtube videos are a couple of real clips of Defenders and a couple of my crawler with matching engine sounds loaded on. See what you think...

The first is a real Defender with a diesel engine. (its a long vid, just watch 30 - 40 seconds to get an idea)
Land, Rover, Defender, 110, 90, Discovery, 200, 300, Tdi, TD5, diesel, turbo, injection, intercooled, sound, noise, engine, v8, 4x4, driving

My crawler with a Scania R730 diesel engine loaded.
TRX4 with Land Rover Defender body and with a Sense Innovations ESS Dual Plus sound simulator fitted. In this clip the sound is from a Scania R730 truck. It'...

A real Defender with a V8 petrol engine

And finally my crawler with a petrol V8 67 Camaro touring car engine sound loaded
TRX4 with Land Rover Defender body and with a Sense Innovations ESS Dual Plus sound simulator fitted. In this clip the sound is from a 67 Camaro Restomod Spo...

Oh. even though it's called a crawler. It can go pretty fast. It was set on slow for those videos because it doesn't look real when it wheelies.

You can't beat the sound of a V8 I reckon it'll be sound simulators similar to that you will be able to add to full size electric cars. They change gear with dump valve noises and everything. Clever stuff.

Think you ought to send a link to Adrian on his Grand Sport splinter site - he seems obsessed about getting strange sounds out of his full sized car, maybe he could adapt this?

Love that little crawler, looks like a lot of fun. The diesel sounds authentic but the v8 sounds great, what a great hobby to have, I feel inspired.
