  • Electric handbrake

Ok last few days whenever I get into the car and start the engine everything is fine except for one extra thing. The handbrake releases without me doing anything. Just tried to simulate it but won't have it. Seems to do it after been parked up for a few hours.

Luckily not been parked on a hill, as I'm now used to not having a proper pull handbrake and actually trust it.

    Any thoughts?

When you set the handbrake are you pulling it twice? If not, that's what it will be. When you pull it once it is only lightly set then when the rear disk cools the brake pads will lose contact

Hmm only once like I always have. Makes sense in a way. Would this be an early sign brakes need doing, or just the colder wetter weather?

Actually just read that again. So if I was on a hill and left car out of gear it could roll away while I'm not there if don't do handbrake switch twice l

No brakes will be fine, just pull the switch up twice..................and ensure you park in gear every time i.e. reverse gear when pointing downhill and 1st when pointing up hill

Never ever heard of this before, the need of pulling twice when not parked on a hill. I’ve never done it on a flat surface and the car doesn’t roll away. Even putting it in gear (automatic transmission) will not case the car to start rolling when pulling only once on the handbreak.

Im sure that pulling it up twice is for if you have a trailer on or a heavy load ect
                just puts it on firmer

I know when you put your seat belt on it makes a noise

Conflicting views . I always thought twice was for when on steep hills. It is ok when warm, just when left for a while. Il try to get a video of it. Already made sure im not touching the brake out of habit etc. Just clutch in, turn key, start car, out of gear, clutch out. Then all notifications pop up including hand brake released.
Need to look into this more i think.

Had a lot of cars with auto h/b,and I’ve never really been that keen on them tbh, especially ones that come on as soon as you park.
i like the option of choice,if I use it or not.
Last two cars 4 series now 3 series, have manual, then I look and think ‘manual’ how dated is that.
                        Conflicting views I surpose.

IIRC from what I have read on the FB group a quick blip on the throttle on a manual will release the electric handbrake?

Only ever used a single pull and it still grips the car well enough when I put it into drive

No issue with brake working and holding car, just strange it goes off when car starts. I don't even give it any gas when starting, just clutch and key. Went to video it this morning and it didn't do it , go figure.
