Got a call from my sister-in-law today, She was worried about the state of her rear brakes. Turned out she had taken her 2012 Kia Ceed in for it's 4th annual service and been presented with a quote for new discs and pads as they were needing replaced. Of course brakes are not part of Kia's 7 year warranty.
Knowing how dealers operate I said I would have a look and this is what I found and you can judge for yourself.
My main bugbear with dealer servicing is they inspect brakes without taking wheels off they never/very rarely strip brakes as part of a service.
These pads are like new and yes the inside of the disc has light surface corrosion (picture 3), but had they freed off the pads in the carriers they would be gleaming after a few miles.
They wanted to charge her £320 to replace rear discs and pads instead of stripping and greasing them which would have taken 20 mins tops.
This is what gives the motor trade a bad name and although this was a Kia dealer I can assure you all dealers work the same way, We get customers (often women) who have gone back to dealer for recall or safety check and they all come back with a quote for hundreds of pounds for unnecessary work.
Be warned!
