So just got back from the garage - I have been quoted between £800 & £1700 depending on what breaks while taking it apart. They dont believe the whine is anything other than a tensioner that needs replacing.
£700 labour to do the oil seal (No access to sump bolts so gearbox off)
£180 Gates Cambelt Kit + labour
Possible exhast replacement (its the orginal exhaust)
All this and I've never missed a service, changed the oil every time it told me to & generally looked after the car bloody well. Its just done a lot of miles in a two year period.
Needless to say I think this will be my last Vauxhall considering the issues I had with my Vectra 2.0T.
