The old 2ltr Bi-turbo had 195; only 15BHP more five years on doesn't sound very impressive.
I was hoping VX might release a 3ltr V6 diesel with 250-300BHP. Not that anyone will want a diesel if the government go ahead with proposed increases in VED, increases in diesel fuel tax and fees for low-emissions zones.
And there's the increasing complexity and repair cost of diesel engine emissions control equipment.

new toxin charges will only affect euro 5 and earlier diesels so the new euro 6 diesel are ok
210bhp isn't great considering the vw passat bi turbo has close to 240bhp but should move fast enough
also with all the smart motorways and average speed cameras around town there's no need for a faster car, no that im promoting speeding and breaking the law

Well, in Germany (I think that might be an important market for Opel) there are still motorways without speed limit, so a matching engine would have been nice. Too bad they don't have access to Fiat's engine supplies anymore as they have both a nice new 2.2 liter diesel and a V6 available.

still enough power to cruise along at autobahn speeds, i've worked in Germany and the autobahn are not race tracks like most people think, the recommended speed is 130km/h (81 mph), some cars will do a little over 100mph and a very very few will exceed that mostly your bmw and merc drivers

210bhp is for single VGT diesel.

And considering the current Biturbo can be tuned to 300bhp and 540nm, it's far from anything that will be offered. If it ever is.

I stand corrected. Lot of info suggesting 210ps and some 220ps, which is a bit disappointing, torque figures better be more impressive. Far as I know twice as many insignias sold in UK as DE.

Maybe it's because the F40 gearbox was designed for 400Nm and VX don't have anything stronger.

Even if VX build a diesel engine that could maintain 400Nm from 1750rpm through to 4000rpm, that's only going to be capable of 225BHP (most diesels have peak BHP around 4000rpm give or take a few hundred rpm).

They have the astra vxr. Insignia vxr and the vxr8. Plenty of strong gearboxes.
Vauxhall sell most of there cars as company cars. They want fairly eco, low tax, cheap to buy cars. Performance isnt their priority

Unlike bmw which has a huge choice of engines. Take the 5 series. You have 520. 525. 530. 535. 540. All in petrol and diesel. And if thats not enough then grab a m5 which can easily be tuned to 750bhp

Astra J VXR and Insignia A VXR both use F40 gearbox.
Both essentially have peak torque of 400Nm except that above 4000rpm the Insignia VXR is allowed to ramp-up to around 440Nm at 5000rpm.

400nm is clearly enough to shift the weight of the insignia. Vauxhall could focus on power to shift it a bit quicker?

Once you've reached a maximum level of torque, the only thing you can do to gain BHP is to increase the ability of the engine to rev.
The old 2.0CDTi 'Bi-Turbo' produced 195PS at 4000rpm and by the time 195PS arrived at 4000rpm the torque had fallen 13% from the peak, to around 350Nm.

So if we're looking at building a 250BHP diesel engine with peak torque of 400Nm and probably 350Nm when peak BHP arrives, we'd need to be able to produce an engine that can keep increasing power until it reaches 5000rpm, which is 1000rpm higher than the older engine.
To reach 300BHP with the same 400Nm torque limit you'd need to rev to about 6000rpm.
                            .

The standard VW biturbo produces 500nm from 1750-2500rpm and 176kw (236bhp)@4000rpm.
At 4000rpm 236bhp peak it still outputs >400nm.
The higher output biturbo produces ~500nm and 200kw (268bhp) @4000rpm.
At 4000rpm 268bhp peak it still outputs >400nm
So to increase bhp we dont necessarily need to increase revs.
                              Or so it appears.
