How 2 convert Astra J / Zafira C Prefacelift Steering wheel to fit in the Insignia
You may want to purchase another insignia steering wheel with controls, wiring, and airbag, this is so the work is not rushed over on your current steering wheel and in case things go wrong.
Parts Required -
New VX Wheel - Zafira C / Astra J Steering Wheel with horn plate and wiring
Insignia Steering Wheel wiring
Insignia Cruise Control Buttons
Insignia Audio Control Buttons (Only if the new one part no dont match the insignia one)
Insignia Steering Wheel Airbag
Mini cable ties
Disconnect the new wheels audio control cc control wiring from the controls and remove the horn plate, silver trim with buttons from steering wheel. They pop out but be gentle and careful.
Do the same as above but on the insignia wheel.
Cut the new VX wheel 2 horn wires with good length to spare, make note where they came from
Cut the Insignia wheel 2 horn wires as close as possible to the connections points, make note where they came from
Remove the new vx wiring from the new horn plate
Transfer the insignia wiring on to the new vx horn plate and place the wiring in to the rubber holders
Join the new vx wheel horn wires to the insignia wiring but make sure you join the correct wire, one goes to the horn plate and one goes to the other contact point under the horn plate.
Tidy and secure the wiring.
Pop out the springs on the plastic u thing away from the horn plate and flip it out of the way so you could remove the airbag securing rods from the horn plate and bend it to be as straight possible on the 4 points circled, so it looks like the 3rd image above
Trim the Insignia airbag bolts a few mm shorter, this will ensure it fits on to the new horn plate.
Stick some rubber feets on the airbag top corners and bottom middle so it touches the horn plate screw surround nicely, as the new horn plate screw surrounds are shallow than the insignia one
Reinsert it back in to the horn plate and test the air bag on it to see how well it latches on, it should be as secure as possible.
Fit the horn plate on to the new steering wheel and screw into place.
Tuck the rectangular connector on to the side of the horn plate
Put the controls and silver trim back on to the new steering wheel and connect the wiring on to the controls.
This is now ready to be fitted to the car.
Completed project
This modification will open up more opportunity if you were to find a bargain on the web.
