why extra lights

Just been looking around some members cars in here and i see lights inside the car (behind tailgate in estate) they look like reverse and tail but hoping someone can explain please.

Because the rear lights lift up with the tailgate/bootlid.

Park up when dark and open boot passers by can still see you.

Or drive with a long load sticking out and boot lid half up. Still got lights.

Interestingly. It's actually required by regulations.

Look at some SUVs and you'll notice they brake lights aren't where you'd expect them to be. The brake lights and indicators are in the bumper, svc the other lights are on the tailgate.
