    Could be the fuel pressure sensor on the rail is faulty but this normally throws up a fault code. Check brown/green wire and earth there should be 5v at it with Ignition on.

    Also check the resistance of Fuel pressure regulator control solenoid on the high pressure fuel pump. Check solenoid when disconnected yellow/red and grey/violet this should be 3.6 ohms.

    Don't know if you can get the fuel pressure checked anywhere, as a last resort you could try cracking one of the injector pipes and crank engine, it should squirt out with a bit of force if it just dribbles it could be high pressure fuel pump problem.

      the lad who looked today done a live check when cranking it - fuel rail pressure came back at around 50000 whatever,

        Pressure sounds ok then. So if fuel is there but no injection, think thats taking you down ECU testing road. It's weird there are no fault codes stored

          finally got this sorted - the timing belt had jumped 2 teeth !! luckily no damage to the engine though. new timing belt and water pump fitted and the car goes fine :-).
