This might explain why the original/discontinued part that I mentioned earlier in the thread was cheaper. They added the mount which in turn pushed the price up. Makes sense now.

I know the upper mounts along with the shocks are vehicle specific, i.e. different on tourer/saloon/hatch. I paid €437.88 for each. €875.76 total. That in todays money is £399 each. If you can get a new shock for £322 Id go for it. On mine the offside was perfect with no corrosion, so before you buy check out the condition of both so you know why one is failing in case the other is soon to follow. The flexride system will still work (to an extent) with a failed shock as the system does not recognise mechanical failure of the shock. The bumb stop and shield had also failed on mine, but these are included with a new shock too.

Yeah, considering the price of these I think you might get away with changing one rather than both as normally recommended, depending on the condition/operation of the other of course.

Bang on the button I'd say. Pity they didnt tell the dealers this. When I was looking I could not find any alternative other than the dealer. Sachs themselves do not even sell them.

I'm a flamin peasant too. Thats why I'm driving a '12 with 330k on the clock. Worth what, Feck all. and I drive 45k a year. On a brighter note I have both rear shocks and both front shocks in the garage, I changed the fronts too but they are perfect. I plan on selling mine in the next couple of months, I can test it in april for 2 years so will look to trade or sell then. The shocks in my garage will be of no use to me then so.....

Interesting.... What do plan on getting, not electric is it?

Edit:Read that again...I might have confused the shocks with the car?

              • No, its the car and the plan is a (dont tell anyone) VW passat bitdi estate. I do 45k a year so it wont be electric.

Not really, first car was a '88 VW jetta 1.6 diesel with no turbo in '96, you had to wind it up for an overtake. then a '93 2.0 pertol vectra in '97, then a '97 petrol V6 omega in '00 (what a car, underrated by a mile), then a '09 siggi in '12, then the current '12 biturbo in '15. This is the longest I've kept any car and to be honest I love it, but its getting long in the tooth for the milage I do. The new GS just doesnt do it for me. I'd two work vans between the omega and first siggi.

Yeah, mileage can take it's toll unfortunately. The Omega was a great car, so comfortable for it's time and a decent amount of shove. All great choices tbh, apart from maybe the engine in the Jetta. The non turbo diesels were death on wheels for overtaking, I remember a mate had a Mk6 Escort with the 1.8D, it was terrifyingly slow....

                      • Yes but I'm in the west of Ireland where every second car back then was a diesel jetta. Every single farmer had one. It was the car to have back then. And when the 'big bumper' model came out!!! Trouble was I was working in the south travelling to see my now wife in Dublin every weekend. Long before motorwars were introduced to us. Lots of overtaking required, hence the swift move to the petrol vectra. Half the M50 around dublin did exist then though. Jetta was something like 54PS and 100Nm and it did 56mpg religously. Biturbo is 192PS and 400Nm and not 56mpg. Jetta was great though I had spots in the grille and spots under the bumper. Simpler times.
