64 Insignia Gear Selector Sticky Lumpy Not Smooth

Recently bought a 6 speed 2.0 CDTI Insignia. I am finding that the gear selector is not smooth, notchy. I don't like driving the car because of it. My last car was Skoda Octavia and I wasn't even conscious of changing gear. In this it feels very imprecise needing forced through the gate.
