    Is there such a thing nowadays? What is the point in communicating by radio? Not being sarky by the way, I was a radio operator in the RN. - . -

      Yes there is still a great following for the hobby still. Its not all about speaking on the radio. With the advent of digital communications it branches out a bit further than the dit da da da of morse.

        That's a blast from the past...I remember in the late 70s to mid 80s when CB radio had a bit of a surge (thanks to the Smokey and the Bandit films) and finding I was speaking to one of my dad's friends. When I asked him which CB he had he said he doesn't have one, he was on his Ham radio...Anyway, went around for an eyeball and his set up was like a Lancaster bomber cockpit. Dials galore! My CB was FM so I was lucky to get as far as Barton but he could speak to people all over the world.

        I also remember his aerial was huge! Put my Dipole to shame.

              I had a colt 444 am and fm 120 channels with built in booster. Then went FM and it was crap. Handle was Traffic Light

                Yeah FM was crap. AM was illegal though and it took me all my time to get my dad to allow FM.
