Hi all,
So i joined a while ago but I've never posted, sooo....
I got to the point about 18 months ago where I had to admit to myself that the current car wasn't practical. I had a BMW 330Ci with a sweet 3 litre straight 6 engine, however, being a coupe, and me having a family and a house to sort, I was clearly in denial in terms of practicality. A change was required.
So, having liked the 'look' of insignia's, I went for what I thought was a reasonably priced car. An Insignia CDTi estate, SRi, my first Vauxhall, with 46k on the clock. It was a tough change at first, I was used to a reasonably stiff setup with pretty-precise handling, and the Insignia felt very different at first, which I found out the first time I got a little enthusiastic going around a smaller roundabout, turned right, and went straight on.... However I wasn't used to a front wheel drive car at all, so I've gradually got to used to it's characteristics. Apart from the front wheel spin when the road is a little moist.
Also, the list of repairs seemed to go on within the first 12 months..
- The boot had been sprayed, badly at some point. This was rectified after someone rear-ended me, not at all seriously, however the rear boot door was replaced. Happy days.
- The boot lid switch failed, with less than 50k on the clock. Random, but sorted.
- The doors filled up with rain water...emptied and grommet sorted
- Front shocks needed replacing....done
- Boost control valve had a mind of it's own, then failed entirely, so needed replacing
- Glow plugs failed, needed replacing
So, since sorting the items, it's behaved itself, and has started to prove itself by doing the job it's employed to do. The handling still catches me out on occasion, particularly when trying to pull away quickly (I live in a town with way more than it's fair share of roundabouts) however, it more than makes up for it on longer journeys, or when lugging me, family and 'stuff' on longer trips or holidays. The boot is also cavernous.
I've performed some minor cosmetic tweaks, namely:
- Added DRLs' in the form of LED's
- Heko wind deflectors
- Inside LED lighting
- Roof bars, but genuinely for the roof box
I guess now, I've started to appreciate it. In hindsight, I would probably have gone for the petrol turbo or VXR, however looking at the information available I wouldn't have saved much in terms of fuel, which was part of the plan.
I also have a Subaru Impreza WRX and a Mazda MX5 Mk2 for summer.
Cheers
