  • Potential new Insignia owner

Hi, I am considering buying my friend's 65-plate 1.6 CDTI SRI hatchback off her. She's had it since new, it has a FSH, just ticked over 40,000 miles. A few parking bumps but that's it. I drive it often and I like it.

I currently drive a Ford Mondeo Mk4 which is getting long in the tooth. The reason I'm posting here is because I'm hoping to find some answers about the ease of upgrading the Insignia with parts from higher-spec models. For instance, my Mondeo started life as an absolute base model and is now all but indistinguishable from a Titanium or a Titanium-X; I've added numerous items easily and cheaply e.g. auto-dimming mirrors, heated and vented half leather interior, automatic wipers, upgraded trip computer, and so on. All of it was fairly cheap and very straightforward.

I'm not so interested in doing anything to the performance as my cars tend to be used for long-distance motorway driving throughout Europe so comfort, reliability and economy are very important.

So I would like to know... if I go ahead with this purchase, what can I do to spec it up a bit? I'd be interested in fitting heated folding mirrors, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a rear seatback with an arm rest would be nice. As I said, appearance and performance aren't really that important.

What have you done to yours?

You can fit the folding mirrors but think you will need the BCMs and a reprogram to make them work. The rear seats are interchangeable. So should not be a problem.

        Hi,

The rear seat is deffo doable but other members will need to help you with the other bits. I think I've heard a few have fitted power fold mirrors though.

Hi welcome ,the car sounds really good for short runs being a 1.6 petrol but in a big car touring around france it might get a bit expensive compared to a diesel.

Folding mirrors dont need programming. Just mirrors, wiring and the switch

Thanks for the replies. Don't have any photos to hand but it's that medium metallic blue, it looks very smart.

Still curious to discover what easy upgrades are possible. As I said before, I bought a base Mondeo and specced it up to Titanium level really cheaply and easily. I know the Insignia is a lot newer but there has to be some things I can do to improve it without buying an upper trim level. Also the price she's giving me is really good, too good almost. Only downside is that it's not an estate.

Also I have read a lot about Insignia diesel engines breaking irreparably around the 60-80,000 mile mark which is the only thing that makes me hesitant. I would love to learn more about this issue, how it can be prevented etc.

I think this was rectified on the face lift model.
