  • Over revving

Hello, I'm new here. I have a question about my 2.0 diesel. It's over revving in 2nd and 3rd gear sometimes. When it does it I have to put my foot on clutch and it goes back to normal. I'm finding this difficult especially in this icy weather . I have had the car for 4 day so not sure if this is normal . It just goes on its own .

Can you please explain over revving? Are you trying to accelerate and not go faster but the revs increase? Could the the clutch be slipping? You're not wheel spinning in the ice?

Hi, no it's not when accelerating, it's when I'm crawling in traffic and change down from 4th into 3rd or 3rd into 2nd, it shoots forward without me even touching the accelerator. If I tap the clutch again it seems to right itself, it doesn't do it the time though, but it's a pain as i have to ride the clutch

Why are you in 3rd or 4th when crawling in traffic? Is the engine near stalling when you are changing down? How long have you been driving?

I've been driving for 30 years! I don't mean when I'm crawling in traffic I mean when I come up to a traffic queue that's crawling .

So are you changing down gears too late i.e. when the revs are near or under 1k for example when in 3rd or 4th?

In that case try changing gear at 1500 - 2000 rpm and see how that goes

I had this trouble when got astra, it was petrol and id been driving diesels for over ten years, couldn't get gear changes right, took it to vauxhall, had a young tech lad tell me i couldnt drive , the car behaved perfectly with him driving. I did get used to petrol again thou. Changed to Insignia and same again, after 3 1/2 years had to learn to drive a diesel again . The gear changes will come, even after six months the rev limit in 1st gear still catches me out.
