How did they cause it not to work?...there isn't any power going to them unless the car is in reverse.

When I got it back from the dealer I put the LED's back in and the fault came back, so it is definitely the LED's.
Maybe screwing with the canbus somehow, but I don't think the reverse bulbs are monitored.
