  • A/C on: scraping noise

Hi, i am new to the forum, got a 15 reg insig ecoflex. Love the car! Have changed timing belt and fit towbar plus wiring following instructional vids on YT. Anyway there is a scratching/scraping noise whenever i have my a/c on. It still works and everything but i dont want it to be a problem that could turn into a disaster!
Has anyone had a similar problem? Im thinking it could be A/C clutch or the pulley making the noise. I will have a poke around next time i get a day free but just thought i would ask about first. Cheers guys, Dave

Hello Dave could well be your clutch / pulley
I have a similar noise from the one on my van it sounds like a jumbo jet taking off but air con works super duper.
I think you can get the clutches on them swapped out , but with that you require someone Fgas registered to poke there fingers in a compressor .

Hi and thanks for the reply, once i investigate the noise further i will try pinpoint the trouble before i send to any specialist. Its not exactly a loud noise but its just enough for the demons in my head to tell me car is gona fall apart 😂 so i just switch ac off .
      Thanks again for the advice

You could start with a gas refill, an air con can start making strange noises when it’s almost out of gas.

Could be low gas. Mine made a racket like a marble in a tin can until I had if gassed. It was blowing warm by then though. No sound after the gas refill though.

As above because I'm pretty sure the refrigerant also has dispersed oil to keep the compressor lubricated.

Thanks for the replies guys, i did get the car refilled when i bought it second hand as it made the noise when we first got it home and thinking about it, the noise went when it got regassed as i have just started noticing it again!! How often does re gas need doing? Ive only had the car about 8 months

I think every 2 years is recommended but seems you might have a small leak somewhere because 8 months isn't really that long. It is also advised to run it regularly all year round, maybe once a week or so to keep the system circulated. Not sure on your spec but I've noticed on mine that with climate control on auto, it does occasionally come on anyway to clear the windows when there's a bit of moisture in the cabin.

A air con service should really be the following
                  Recover all AC gas
                  Vacuum system out
                  Recharge system
                  Add oil,and leak dye
Also as above every 2 years
But also receiver/ dryer should be replaced every 2 years ,as that holds moisture which is no good
And of course pollen filter and deodoriser ( stop pongs ) or sick car syndrome which is a known medical condition.
Trouble with car AC systems is that there are joints with sealing washers inside also the engine and car are. Under a lot of load , vibration movement, so systems do spring minute leaks , also the condenser is slap bang in the firing line of stones debris flys .
