  • Automatic Gearbox (AF40) problem on 2011 sri 160hp 108k miles - gutted!

    Hi All,
just looking for a bit of advice - got my insignia (Automatic Gearbox AF40, 2011 Sri A20DTH Engine, 160hp 108k miles 3 months ago) and all seemed well but this last few days I have been experiencing issues with gearbox.
When I move lever through to Drive it seems to slam in to gear - it does not do it when cold but when warmed up.
Also, very occasionally it seems to gear down a little harshly when slowing down hard.
I have messaged an auto gearbox specialist who replied that this is a common symptom of worn out gearbox so I am gutted!!
As a last resort before condemning my car, is it worth trying a gearbox oil change?
I am not very mechanically minded so would have to take it in somewhere but also wondering do I try basic drain and refill or should/can I go for full flush?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi

This has been mention few times on Internet, sometimes you can replace oil and improves others have mention about software update and then there is few that needed new valve body replaced, problem is if you change oil you can't get all out, you only going to drain about 3L rest will stay inside torque converter ect., I remember when I had 330i with ZF gearbox I had to drain oil once, refill drive car for about week and repat again, but changing the oil can't harm the gearbox worth a try a spacially if never been done, nearly all manufactures will claim seal for life, yeah what they should say is "life of gearbox" once gearbox is shaged then so is the oil. Not relevant to your question but when I had problem with the ZF gearbox managed to speak to ZF gearbox technician and he said to me that all oil in auto gearboxes should be changed every 40k, most car owners won't bother to change when they buy new car as manufactures don't mention that it needs to be replace and is not part of any service, problem is when you get higher milage car and oil never been replaced then you find your self with problems. I wish there was done by manufactures to put in every 40k oil has to be changed, same like you have cmbelt you know you better change because there is high risk of snapping.

      Thanks Ade555.
I will certainly try the oil replacement - so I do it once then maybe do it again a week or so later?
Can a garage not get it all out in one session?

The idea of doing again in week time is to reduce the amount of old oil, I don't thing there is way draining the gearbox and torque converter with out removing from car, so is cheaper doing the above, this may not fix your problem so single change should give some indication.

Sounds like solenoid valves which I'd say is simpler to fix with full recon gearbox rather than new valve assembly.

Thanks Buttons - would that cause the auto gearbox to slam into drive? (gearbox seems to perform ok whilst driving, just whenever gear stick gets put in to D)

So what indication might this give me?

Also, I have heard about maybe needing to have software update - could this apply to my 2011 car?

If your problem is down to old oil then there should be improvement to your problem, there are number of possibility where gearbox overheated at some point, incorrect level or damaged valve body, I always start with cheaper option first, if you change oil and you see still the same after few days then you know it needs rebuild. Just please have open mind sometimes no amount of oil changes will fix auto boxes if its to late.
