  • Automatic Gearbox (AF40) problem on 2011 sri 160hp 108k miles - gutted!

    Hi All,
just looking for a bit of advice - got my insignia (Automatic Gearbox AF40, 2011 Sri A20DTH Engine, 160hp 108k miles 3 months ago) and all seemed well but this last few days I have been experiencing issues with gearbox.
When I move lever through to Drive it seems to slam in to gear - it does not do it when cold but when warmed up.
Also, very occasionally it seems to gear down a little harshly when slowing down hard.
I have messaged an auto gearbox specialist who replied that this is a common symptom of worn out gearbox so I am gutted!!
As a last resort, is it worth trying a gearbox oil change?
I am not very mechanically minded so would have to take it in somewhere but also wondering do I try basic drain and refill or should/can I go for full flush?
Any help would be much appreciated.

With auto gearboxes, always try an oil before anything silly.
    Half the problems disappear.
Make sure correct oil is used not a generic one too.

      Thanks Geordieric.
I will certainly give it a try then - I have read somewhere that this oil is ok:
      Comma MVATF+ Fully Synthetic

I don’t know exact which one tbh. Just make sure grade is correct n decent brand.
Grade will be in your handbook (if can’t find they are online )
Sometimes manufacturers say one type covers all. Gearboxes way to important for me to not do specific one

If doing it yourself, undo the filler one first. As if you can’t refill it can’t be driven to a garage

          Thanks again!
I have the handbook but it does not say which oil to use for gearbox - in the technical data section it only lists Engine oils per model - nothing for gearbox oils. I have been searching online for the correct atf for my model insignia - the only references I have come across (in forums) is the comma mvatf+ as above and also "aisin oem atf-0t4" fluid which I can order online - can not find a local stockist for this one

Comma MVATF+ is the one I used to drain and refill my autobox.

IIRC drained on ramps 2.5ltr came out so 2.5ltr went back in.

That's great - thanks Lee, at least I can get that one from my local Halfords and provide it for my garage knowing it is the correct fluid to use, rather than let them supply.
              Cheers!

is your choice what you put in gearbox but I would only use this

Use genuine oil as above but full flush cannot be achieved on one drain and re-fill . Due to the amount of oil being in the torque converter . It normally takes between 2-3or 4 drain and re-fills , first change you may get 2.5 litres out , check condition of old oil if black and smells burnt then there could be other underlying problems, burnt clutches etc . If it has a reddish tint then it's just natural.re-fill same quantity move through gears and drive for a week then repeat , until consistent colour achieved.

I have the same problem on my 2011 auto estate. I have had the box oil changed but the level plug that is supposed to be central to the drain plug is not there. My local garage, who l trust, has been in touch with Vauxhall about this say they have been told that there is no level plug and send it to a auto box specialist. End result is how the hell do you know if the right amount t amount is in. I have told the farage to add another a further half litre. Right or wrong l will let you know.

                          Hello Phil,
I had my oil replaced on Monday - garage just put back in what came out which he said was just under 3L. He said there appeared to be no leaks and the fluid that come out was quite black so it seems had not been replaced for a very long while (if at all).
My symptoms do seem to have improved somewhat so I am going to have it done again in a week or so.
I have read a few previous comments saying about 2.5 litres have come out of theirs, so I am surprised that almost 3L came out of mine - does any one know if this could be correct and my mechanic was right in putting the same amount back in?
Or should I ask him to put a bit less in on the next drain and refill?

2,5 liters is just a round about figure .you may get more or less out .
Basically what ever amount came out goes back in again .

Thanks Lizard! I will make sure that the same goes in as comes out when I have it done again next week.
