  • Suspected 4wd fault

    Hi all,
Had a search through related posts about 4wd problems but could not find answer to my issue.

    I have a 09 insignia 2.0T 4x4 with 90000 on the clock.

The issue I have is during acceleration through the first 4 gears I get a thud from the rear. The harder I accelerate the louder and closer together the thuds get. It feels like it comes from each rear wheel alternatively. The issue only arises once the haldex unit is running warm. The car does also judder when reversing on full lock which I'm aware it a tell tale sign of haldex unit issues.

My thoughts are the haldex unit oil level is low which is only noticeable once oil has warmed/thinned out. Due to this the haldex unit is struggling to operate correctly and affecting drive to rear wheels.

Just looking to get a feel from you guys if you suspect the same or if there is a another problem so I don't go ordering unnecessary parts

    Thanks

Hello iceman205 unfortunately knowing the haldex systems when you start getting symptoms like the ones you are experiencing it is the unit itself, and not a cheap replacement
The early generation systems did suffer from failure
As far as you are aware has it ever been serviced?
    20.000 miles is the interval
I would first try to get a second opinion from a 4x4 specialist who knows about the haldex systems .
Sorry to be the voice of doom .

      Thanks for the reply lizzard-t.
I have had a look through all the paperwork I have for the car and can't find anything so I'm going to assume it's not had one [emoji17]

I'd rather the voice of doom than false hopes.

I've had no warning messages come up on the dash in relation to the 4wd system.

I think the 3 main problems could either be or combination of:

      Faulty pre charge pump
Faulty control unit (no error messages makes this unlikely?)
      Faulty clutch pack

From what I've read a blocked filter can cause problems and if its not been serviced then.... Well we know the outcome.

I will get in touch with a specialist like you suggested to see what I can do. I'd rather do the work myself as it'll save a fortune but I draw the line at pulling the innards out of that unit.

      Thanks

The voice of doom says .................
I am refuring to a different make of car with the same system ( mines a Saab turboX ) but I know the VAG systems (any Quattro version ) , there may ( a I say may) be an earth cable between the body of the car and the control unit ( I think) that cable sometimes gets brittle and comes apart .or there's a multi plug that the pins can come corroded, thease 2 are only visible from underneath towards the rear of the car .
If you turn the car on , can you hear the pump start ?
How long have you had the car ( i.e. Has it got worse over time ?)
The system dose not give an indication of faults via display, just by driving as you have found you have classic symptoms.
If you have a bank that likes to say yes , then lower prices are wait for it ...........£800.00 for a good S/H unit of known history that's without fitting.
Then your next stop is £1000 >
          Plus fitting .

It might be the excuse to get a new car

I'll have a look underneath at the next chance I get and listen out for the pump. I've just found you can test the resistance on the pump with a multimeter. It says a good pump will be between 5-8 ohms.

As you say the units are on other manufacturers cars and the pumps are about £150 new however because its vauxhall a new pump is £300 .
Still cheaper than a new unit if that's the issue....

I've had the car for about 8 months and didn't notice it at first.
RBH a new car does sound like a solution but I really like this one coupled with the fact there isn't many of them in the UK. Only 50 registered left I think when I looked on howmanyleft. There's more Vxr's about from the looks of it.

I'd try an oil/fluid change first....maybe it's the viscosity that's just thinned and needs refreshing.

                      An update guys,

Following member Oggy's (thanks) guides I changed oil and filter on haldex and also done transfer box and rear diff whilst under there.

Not much room to work on the haldex unit .
Checked pump as well and all seemed fine.

Ran the car and problem seemed to go however after a few miles I've got the "service rear axle" and "service 4x4 system" come up [emoji17]

I'm going to check oil levels again but is this probably the cause where they've worked their way round inside and dropped?

Everything went back on fine and triple checked it all.

Hello iceman.it means now it's logging a code . check level.but when you service it .you just re-fill with the correct quantity.
Did a lot of oil come out what sort of condition/ colour was it !

Not a lot came out but it wasn't that bad looking. Looked like it had not been done that long ago imo.

I wasn't getting the thud I mentioned in first post afterwards however now I've had these warnings the 4wd system is disabled so no idea if it's really gone.

I'll see if I can have a look underneath tomorrow and check rear diff and haldex levels. Fingers crossed its a bit low.

On a side note is there a way to read the errors with a scanner? I've got torque Pro and Bluetooth adapter but this only reads engine ecu.

                              Ok thanks for that,

Just gone out to the car and put ignition on to second click. After the car has done its self check no errors came up whereas earlier after a run it keep displaying the codes everytime it done its self check.

It does seem like its low oil now as the oil has had a chance to drop back down.

Ill know for sure once I've checked levels.
