  • SVS Limp Mode

    Hi,

Wonder if anyone on here can help at all please?

    65 plate Insignia 2.0 Diesel SRi - 77k miles

Had the SVS message come up a few weeks ago and car is dumped into limp mode. Switching car off and back on allows you to drive it fine again but had it to a garage to look at

I dont have the codes but was told DPF blocked, had oil changed, forced regen, EGR valve cleaned etc all good for a day.

Next day SVS back on and in limp mode, car back to garage & EGR replaced.

2x 30 mile test drives completed by the garage and no fault.

I pick the car up, drive 1 mile, SVS and limp mode is back on.

Back to the garage and doesn't show any error codes.

Turbo intercooler pipe checked (by garage, not me), no tears or splits although it is a bit wet on the back.

Am at the point where i cant be bothered throwing any more time or money at it and will just take to a garage and take whatever cash they offer for as i don't owe anything on it. Disappointing as its dirt cheap to run with the high MPG and low tax.

Can anyone offer any help without the fault codes?

    Thanks

    Simon

      Hi,

      Many thanks for your reply.

In your opinion is it worth a final £150 roll of the dice and replace the intercooler pipe? In your experience is this normally where the problem lies even if its not showing any signs of being split? Does the fact it is wet on the back imply there is a problem with it?

      Thanks again

Hello Simon you say the intercooler hose is a bit " wet on the back " ? Where about son the back ? Is the substance black oily? .
It's really a guessing game without some base line ( i.e. Fault code/s)
But you do say you can re-set it by turning the car off then on again ,
Dose the SVS and LHM come up when hot or cold or when you go for boost ?
Has the garage got the availability of running a live data scan ? .
But as said at beginning Codes are a useful base to start from ..

          Hi,

          Thanks also for your reply.

I am not an expert on cars, far from it so i will say it as it is and apologies if i come across as patronizing

He reached around the back of the pipe around the middle, fingers were wet with brown liquid.

The SVS light can come on at any time, hot or cold, under boost or tootling along. It normally dumps the car into limp mode but not always, sometimes its just the message and no limp mode but more often than not its both. Pull over, switch the car off, wait 10 seconds, switch it back on and it might be fine for 1 minute or fine for a day after that. No engine warning lights ever come on, and on the last instance, no fault codes on his machine either.

Unfortunately i don't have the fault codes and am not aware if he has a live data scan.

Also, dont know what the LHM you refer to means.

          Thanks again

Thank you for the info. To add to what i posted earlier, the EML light is now on again and not going away. Car also appears to be stuck in LHM now too. Switching it off and back on does not reset it

Depending on how much you want to spend , I would get another garage to look at it .
It's now stuck in LHM . And if the SVS light is on there is a code .
Depending on what sort of scanner the other garage is using , because not every scanner generic scanner can read the codes .
So I would get another garage to look at it and at least pull the codes .

I understand the op no longer has the car but I thought this might be helpful.

My car went into limp mode and it was a blocked DPF. Took it to my local garage and he plugged it in and it said DPF full so he done a forced regen. Car was fine. Two days lated limp mode. Ba k to the garage DPF full. He done another forced regen (at no cost) car was fine, a week later, limp mode again took it back and he called a DPF specialist and they said it can get blocked to the point where a regen won't work anymore and a new DPF is required. So anyway he ordered a new one and fitted it and it has been fine since.

Same issue i was starting to get with my old preface Tourer and the reason i've now got a petrol tourer. Guy told me a new DPF from Vauxhall was nearly £2k so i didnt bother. Was never sure if any of these places that claim to be able to clean them were any good so i cut my losses on it as we lost trust in the car.

I had numerous forced regens done but the problem was that i didnt do the miles that meant it got hot enough to burn off the crap in the DPF so it gradually got worse.

I tried UK carbon clean and I might as well of just set fire to the money.its a placebo effect .you cannot get rid of carbon deposit with anything apart from removing and acid dipping .
A good thing for DPF cleaning is brick acid . remove and clean that way.
