  • Auto gearbox behavior.

    Hi and HNY!

I just wanted to ask if the following is normal.

I have the auto gearbox and noticed that when it's really cold outside, when I first drive the car the gearbox kind of slips until it warms a little. I. E. If I push it a bit harder, the revs go up but the car isn't moving faster.

This goes for 2-3 mins and then it is OK.

    Hi, Happy New Year.

I am new to automatics but I have noticed this also. I suspect that the ecu holds the car in lower gears for longer when it is cold to get things warmed up more quickly. Once up to operating temperature it allows quicker changes. Is it possible that it is not slipping, rather just not changing up when you expect it to and changing up a little later?

No, mine has no sport button, I think older autos on Vectra had a sport and winter mode. The new ones use the sport/tour/normal modes if you have the flexride damping. I dont, but I can use the paddles in D or manual mode...

The fluid in clutch probably taking longer to gel, engine will rev more than forward momentum gained.

Hi, its not shifting up at higher revs because if I press the gas harder, the revs will go up with a lot but the car is not accelerating that much.

It is a 2009 2.0 CDTi with 225K km on it.

This only happens if the temp is 3-5 degrees C or lower.

Probably better to let it warm up a bit before setting off. Everytime it slips it's causing permanent damage.
Get to a gearbox specialist and get it checked out

Have you got any history of gearbox oil changes ?
No unit is sealed for life , that's just a manufacturer ploy .

Engine revs do not initiate change, speed of vehicle changes gears.
