    Hi all,

I just bought an Insignia estate - 2010, 2.0 ecoflex - and it's the newest car I've ever owned by at least 10 years. (If you go by when the models were released, it's about 15.) So I'm a bit out of my depth with all the toys and gizmos.

Currently I've been mainly driving a 1989 Toyota Camry - got drunk and bought it on EBay for £500 - for the last few years. It has EFI and an early ecu, but that's the only electronic system in the whole thing. Toys comprise electric mirrors, electric windows and electric sunroof. If anything goes wrong, it's usually completely obvious, and it's such a well built machine that working on it is trivially easy.

I also have a 98 MGF VVC, which has abs and airbags; still no toys, but the whole thing is a toy. It's ridiculously awful to work on, easy to see why BL went bust - but the online knowledge base is vast.

Before those (unless I've forgotten one) was £275 worth of 1991 BMW 3 series - another ebay special, of course.

Recently had a baby, so time to put away the older cars and get something a bit safer. I think I'm going to need lots of advice on all the electronic bits.

Welcome mate. You've come to the right place, however you probably know more than you think. A car is a car - it has an engine, wheels, brakes, suspension etc, and there's people on here with the right tools and knowledge to help with the electronics.

Hello, there's a fix for most things on here, and plenty of ways to make it individual (though between you and me some are a bit dubious! ) thead

Don't be so sure of that

The problems with the electronics aren't so much fixing them as knowing what they're supposed to do in the first place! I spent a good couple of minutes trying to work out how to unfold the wing mirrors today - and before I accidentally folded them, I didn't even know the car could do that.

Mostly it's not a question of whether you can do it, but how long it'll take. A bit of advice from people with experience saves endless time.
