I don't know much about the steering racks buddy, but I'd personally say the seals etc would be serviceable parts, so I'd imagine you should be able to buy them
But If the subframe has to come off to access the steering rack, then maybe best just to replace the rack as it would save time.

For piece of mind, I'd phone around the steering specialists to see if they could replace the seals, if they say yes, then you know that the rack can be saved without the need for a new one.

If so, then someone somewhere must sell the seals etc.

Hello dbagnall2002, the problem with the steering is on going!! I asked around trying to confirm if the seals could be replaced but couldn't get a straight answer! i got it through the MOT last year but this year it needs sorting. it also seems its a job no one will take on so whatever happens i'll be doing it myself (Doesn't bother me) to get by at the moment i've been empting the steering boot and topping up the reservoir about every two/three months .....

From what I understand one of the main costs is the labour and time. I believe the subframe has to be dropped. When my rack went on my Vectra it had to sit on the mechanic's ramps while the old rack was exchanged it puts the ramp out of action too long, probably why many don't like the job.

When the power steering pump went on one of my saabs , being that its EHPS , its integral ,so the whole shibang was replaced.
rack with pump brand new £350 labour £400
so it shows as Drew says the labour kills the price.
Also onto the point about the rack seals .
If the rack is leaking through the seals then there's a possibility that some dirt has entered the rack ends and scored the surface.
If thats the case then the seals ( if available) would not cut the mustard.
yes trying to save a rack that maybe serviceable is good , but you have to remember that its under high pressure and if the seal all of a sudden give way
                Then thThe a safety issue.
I remember many years ago we had a car on the ramp with a power steering issue , with one seal gone ,and it was so dangerous that the hydraulic pressure would not equalise and whip the steering wheel out of your hands .

Not had it done yet, had a few other things to sort first, the leak isnt major on the rack, just the seal looks wet, not dripping etc, I want to get it done because I believe it can fail all of a sudden ? Without warning.

£550 sounds like a reasonable price.

Mine had been leaking for some time i reckon three even four years!!! just before MOT's i'd empty the rubber boot !!!! but this year i didn't fancy my chances. as for the price i'll admit it did hurt putting my card in the slot when paying, when all it was is a small rubber ring that was the problem which would have cost a tenner !!!!
