  • New member - Strongly considering an Insignia

    Good morning everyone,

    Thanks for having me!

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind, I currently have a 1.6L THP Peugeot 308 '14 plate, which is starting to have a couple of problems, I've decided it's time to sell it, partly due to the problems arising and the fact that I have recently had to move locations for work.

I have been looking for sometime at a car that I prefer, and have fallen in love with the Insignia, it's a great looking car, the only problem I have is I've seen very mixed reviews about it's reliability/MPG, from the amount of driving I need to do, would you recommend this car for it's reliability/MPG?

I currently drive 80 miles a day with a 65/35 split of motorway/non-motorway. Bear in mind this is only for work, and the car will be used for non-work driving. I've roughly estimated this will be at an absolute minimum 17,500 miles/yr.

    My questions are:

How long/many miles have you had your Insignia for, have you had many problems?
    What are servicing/repair fees like?
Are there any common problems with Insignias?
If I was to get an Insignia, would you recommend the diesel or petrol based on my mileage/use of car?

Thank you to everybody who comments, it's appreciated!

    Astro

Welcome, I'm pretty sure everyone will say diesel is right for you. There might be a few things to consider but I'll leave that to them as I don't own a diesel

Welcome! One part that fails rather often is the M32 gearbox, there is already a lot of information on the internet. There seems to be an update after a specific year, don't know exactly when that was. It is used on all Insignia with engines with 320 Nm or les

Welcome Astro, nice introduction! As you will soon discover this is the friendliest forum on t'interweb.

You don't say which Insignia you are looking at, A or B. I had a pre-facelift 2013 2.0 CDTi 165bhp for nearly 5 years, my son in law is now running it and it's about to go over the 100,000 miles mark. No huge problems, replaced timing belt and water pump at 90k, and he's getting about 50mpg (although he does weekly 90 mile trips on the A1).

I've had a 2018 1.5T petrol Grand Sport since May last year, I do a lot less miles and struggle to get better than 30mpg from it. But I much prefer the GS (otherwise known as the B) to the Insignia A, it's a very different driving experience.

I think of I had the choice between, say, a top spec A and a basic B from the same year {or 2017) I'd choose the B.As for petrol vs diesel, with your type of trips I'd go diesel.

          Hi,

The issue that keeps showing itself is low oil pressure due to the oil pickup seal failing. That issue is mainly on the pre facelift diesel Insignia A but we have heard of a few facelift Insignia A's popping up with it. It tends to be high milers but has been known to fail earlier. You need to take into account this is a forum and it attracts people who have an issue so it can look like an issue is more common than it is. There must be thousands of Insignias out there who never have the problem.

The insignia B's haven't really been around long enough to show a pattern in a particular issue but a few of the diesels have had clutches failing prematurely.

Depending on the spec of the car, the repair cost can vary. For example shock absorber on a adaptive suspension is £300+ a corner, whereas normal shock absorber on normal suspension is £50 a corner.

                  Diesel. 2l if insignia A, 1.5 or 1.6 if a B. Mind you nothing wrong with 2l B.
As in all modern cars costs are silly money.
Insignia A have the oil pick up seal, AFL is good but costly if go wrong. From what I have heard the A is more economical than the B, and the mid range BHP again more economical. Spec varies but in general the B has better standard spec on a 67 68 plate, but since options have been added as extras, even rear wipers .
Plenty of choice out there for A or B

Welcome, lots of advice on here. I had an Insignia A preface 2.0 cdti 160 Sri Tourer manual. I bought it a year old with 17,000 miles on and traded it after 4.5 years at 104,000 miles. In that time I had a new clutch (I tow a caravan so extra strain), a radiator (the lower nearside bracket broke and a leak ensued) and apart from brake pads etc. I think that was about it.
