  • Parallel parking

Having observed some fellow drivers' maneuvres when parallel parking, here are some practical subjective views for parking in the street. These in my mind do not breach any of the human rights but make it just a tad nicer to all to use their cars.

    1) first of the queue? Place the front of your car as far forward as possible. Every cm helps the ones behind you. Being the first in line, you will get out of your spot easily anyway.

    2) last of the queue? Place the end of your car as far back as possible.

    3) Second cars front and back can park really close to the first and the last cars. Why? Because the first ones will get out of their spots anyway, and you will help all others. But you can also forget this and leave no more than 1 metre to the first/last car.

    4) Thirds etc. Leave no more than one metre to the front (if third-first) or end (if third-back). All cars will get out in that space, and the cars in the middle will have a full 2 metres to maneuvre.

    5) Leave your car wheels straight, evenly ca. 15cm from the curb whenever possible. You won't scratch the rims, easy for others to align their cars accordingly. Note: at sloped streets, turn wheels towards curb to the free roll direction in case handbreak or gear fails.

As a result, and you can experiment this with your Matchbox collection, provided for simplicity that a Merc S-class is 5,0 metres in length, in a 30 metre parking space you can easily fit from last to first in queue

    a) 0m - 5m - 1m - 5m - 1m - 5m - 1m - 5m - 1m - 5m - 0m = 5 cars in 29m, which leaves an extra metre.

Or as too often seen (especially women and 75+ drivers, sorry not sorry)

    b) 1,5m - 5m - 2m - 5m - 2m - 5m - 2m - 5m - 2,5m = 30m for 4 cars.

The proportionate waste is worse at shorter parking spaces. One car can spend 10 metres and 2 cars nicely 17 meters if placed 2-5-3-5-2, when 17 metres can easily accommodate 3 cars in 0-5-1-5-1-5-0.

In Italy the parking and tiny car culture allow for (-0,5)-3,5-0,1-3,5-0,1-3,5-(-0,5) = 9,7metres for 3 cars.

Any views on this? Thanks for reading this far.

Attached a picture that underlines the message. The allowed space starts from the rear of the red Audi and ends 2 meters in front of the SUV.
