  • Pulling to the left

    Hi

Recently purchased a 2014 vx line insignia. After driving for a few days I noticed a definite pull to the left when driving.

Dealership were in agreement and have had a specialised 4 wheel alignment company in to work on the car. This did not resolve the problem So the dealership have changes the near side front bearing and strut. I still think it is pulling although does seem better.

The car does have 20inch alloys on so I can imagine you will feel the camber of the road more.

    Anyone any ideas?

    Regards
    Adam

the 4 wheel lazer alignment should deal with all that, camber in/out & toe in/out.

Is it pulling all the time or just under braking???

Could be one of a few things really..

If when braking it'll be either unevenly worn brake pads / discs or a stuck caliper

It could be the air pressure in the tires being different

If it’s not your tires, it may be your steering or suspension causing your car to pull to one side. Worn out components will impact how your car drives.

First thing I'd do is check the tyre pressure, then jack the car up, off with the wheel and check all around the tyre for any wear, damage etc.

I could be one of a number of things
Was the dealership a VX dealer?

I had it happen once on a Mondeo. One of the front wheels threw one of the weights. I didn't know at the time but it started pulling to the left. Checked tyre pressures etc.. All ok so took it to garage and he noticed a clean spot on the inside of the wheel where a weight had been. So I popped to a tyre place, got the wheel re balanced and it sorted it.

              Tyre pressure all ok.

Yes it was from a vx dealership. They have so far done the four wheel alignment changed the wheel bearing and strut still pulls to the left.

              Baffled....

Are the tyres on the left the same type as on the right? Similar tread depth? Has the vehicle been in a crash previously?

Could it be possible that it has had a new steering rack or one or both track rod ends replaced at some point? When driving straight is the steering wheel perfectly straight? Put a bit of tape top dead centre at the top of the wheel and try it and note where the tape is when its driving straight ahead. The tracking may have been adjusted at some point when the steering wheel is not dead straight and the electronic power steering gubbins is trying to correct it? While the tape is marking the top turn your wheel full lock left and right and note exactly how many turns to the last degree you get each way. If there's a difference then someone may have set it up wrong at some point.

I think it may be a steering fault. I've noticed if I accelerate hard the car can shift side to side.

this can also be symptoms of a failing driveshaft....wandering,under acceleration

That is exactly how I would describe it a wander rather a pull.

Yeah could be the bearing in the driveshaft failing, the CV joint is all over the place.

Jack up the car, and give the driveshaft a wobble, holding it as close to the CV boot as possible, up & down, forwards & backwards. There should be very little play in the joint if it's fine. If it's knackered then you'll be able to wobble it round.
