I expected the ESP to be turned off at low speed like the ALB not working below 10MPH on many cars.

The ESP has to be able to detect wheelspin when moving off from a standstill for the traction control to work. I'm not sure, but I think the anti-lock braking works below 10mph. I seem to remember it working frantically as I slid on black ice over a zebra crossing at not much more than walking pace.

The problem seemed to be turning either way! But I will check that out.

If I find its one way that will sort that out but i suspect not and I can't think why both sensors would go at the same time!

Just bad luck that both should go at the same time. But no reason why it can't happen.

Both are operating in the same harsh environment and will have covered the same mileage, assuming one hasn't been replaced already.
