If i remember correctly, when i removed the gear knob from my Vectra, also an automatic, it was a similar proceedure.
Finding the clip and removing it was a pig but after the first time it was then very simple.Comment

Taken from the Haynes manual. It looks like you have to remove the gaiter to remove the knob.Comment
