But as it states in the Autoexpress article:

"Vauxhall and PSA will have to find a workaround for this, however, European laws mandate all new cars sold since March 2018 must be fitted with eCall, which contacts the emergency services in the event of a serious incident. A solution will likely come from the French car giant though, as Vauxhall says future models will “integrate Groupe PSA technology” as the takeover moves forward."

If they don't find a workaround then they will be breaking European law!!! Unless they're keeping stum until we leave after Brexit!!!!! I wonder if that's why they have stated the cut-off date after 2020???? Oh I can be a cynic

Interesting....Yeah I'd say owners of cars bought after March 2018 have some comeback due to the ecall rule. That wouldn't really help those of us who bought their car before that date though. Thinking about it, I doubt Brexit will have little to do with the 2020 announcement because the majority of those affected by this are Opel drivers in Europe where the rule will still apply. PSA have only mentioned Opel at the moment. That could possibly mean one of two things. a. They're only going to do a work around for Opel cars in Europe. Or b. Are all new Vauxhall's going to be rebranded as Opel?

Another thing that could be interesting is how this will affect the Buick Regal....will they still have an option of OnStar as its offered as an after market add on in the US...or was. Not sure if that ended.

        Unacceptable

The 2018 Insignia was sold with extensive promises on the OnStar services. And now, just a few months later, they give the message that OnStar services will be closed. Some kind of alternative will be introduced, but not compatible with present hardware! A car bought just a few months ago will now be outdated, loosing functions and considerable second-hand value. Not acceptable!

Totally! It will be like all those old Carlton's etc with the Traffic Master buttons. Still come across the odd one now and then. Hope they come up with something to keep On-star or something like it going.

The requirement is intended for vehicles with type approval after April 2018 to be fitted with this. So it doesnt cover GS or any other car on the road. Its been voted on, but not published and wont be legal till 3 weeks later. Based on my experience of plant health this could take a while.
