Have you checked the supply voltage with a multimeter? Does the supply go on and off?

If you have taken a feed directly from the battery then the canbus has nothing to do with it.

What is the make / model of the kit?

I would check to see if it's the same with the heat pad disconnected and then check the continuity of the pads themselves. It could be telling you that the pads are not connected / faulty.

With a multimeter set on continuity/resistance. You should get a circuit reading through the pads, one probe on each pin in the connector.

Yes, that's it exactly. There should be a reading through the pads.

Do you know how many heating elements are in the mat? If not then attach one meter probe to one of the cables and with the other probe check if you have continuity between that cable and the other three.

Do that for the other two configurations and see what readings you get.

All you've said in your post is 'resistance in the red, none in the brown'. Which cables did you measure between as it makes a difference?
